Flinders University Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Research) Professor Raymond Chan responds to the release of the National Science Statement and the National Science and Research Priorities.
The release of the National Science Statement outlines a long-term vision for Australian research in support of the federal government’s industry priorities to achieve a Future Made in Australia.
It will guide universities on how to most effectively contribute to Australia’s advancement, through research that addresses the five key pillars of science identified by the government as the priorities for the next decade.
While the priorities broadly aim to support Australia’s positive social and economic trajectory, the particular attention given to respecting and including Indigenous knowledges is momentous.
It is an acknowledgement of the value of considering different ways of knowing, being and doing, and of listening and learning from different perspectives.
Indigenous knowledge within institutions requires a fundamental reset to advance social justice and build a stronger nation.
Flinders applauds the acknowledgement of the valuable contribution Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples make to STEM.
Aligned with its recently launched Indigenous Research Strategy and First Nations Researchers Collective FNRC, Flinders is committed to supporting the shared national agenda to elevate and advance Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander knowledge systems.
As a roadmap that sets the stage for new scientific advancements that will drive transformation, the National Science Statement places research at the heart of our nation’s progress in areas including sustainability, resilience and social cohesion. By backing the aspirations of the Statement with tangible support for research, the government could powerfully amplify the wealth of potential in Australia’s research ecosystems.
For its part, Flinders is advancing future research to tackle emerging issues, by collaborating with the community and industry to identify their priorities, and aiming to develop early interventions, long-term solutions, and strategic planning in areas of national importance.
Today’s announcement not only promises to shape our approach to research moving forward but also encourages collaboration between universities, industry, and government, ensuring that our efforts are aligned with the most pressing national needs and that they effectively work towards finding solutions to create a better future.
