Students rate Flinders among nation’s best

Students have rated the exceptional learning experience provided by Flinders University as amongst the best in Australia, reflected in a continuing increase in undergraduate student satisfaction as reported in the 2021 Student Experience Survey.

Exceeding the national average in every category and improving on its own results year-on-year, Flinders strong performance rests in its student centred ethos, and determination to provide its students with high quality learning and paramount support to succeed in their studies.

Flinders has risen to 7th nationally on undergraduates’ ratings of student support, continuing a positive trajectory from 16th nationally in 2019 to 10th nationally in 2020, and now improving another 3 places.

Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Students) Professor Romy Lawson says Flinders University navigated the challenges and disruptions of COVID-19 by boosting student support and flexible learning programs to protect continuity of studies.

The results come of the back of a difficult 2020 marked by campus closures and sudden transfer to fully online learning, a period during which Flinders nevertheless remained above the national average.

“Our results are evidence of our consistent excellence – testament to the dedicated professionalism and commitment of our exceptional staff and our increased investment in education and student support” Professor Lawson says.

“Importantly, our focus on putting students at the centre of all we do is recognised by our students in their feedback to the survey. Future students seeking an outstanding learning experience can take it from their peers that Flinders delivers.”

“Our overall undergraduate student satisfaction rating of 78.9% is almost 6% above the national average and placed Flinders firmly within the top ten universities on this measure, at number seven.”

“Furthermore, we improved in all five categories upon which performance is measured, including learner engagement, student support, learning resources, teacher quality, and skills development. In learner engagement in particular, Flinders was more than 14% ahead of the national average,” Professor Lawson added.

The satisfaction rating is derived from 5 measures
– Skills development in which Flinders rated 83.7% compared to the national average of 79.1%
– Learner engagement in which Flinders rated 62.0% compared to the national average of 47.9%
– Teaching quality in which Flinders rated 82.1% compared to the national average of 79.2%
– Student support in which Flinders rated 79.0% compared to the national average of 71.9%
– Learning resources in which Flinders rated 87.2% compared to the national average of 80.5%

“I thank our academic and professional staff whose dedication to the success of students at this difficult time was second to none, displaying flexibility, creativity and helpfulness. Our people are our strength, and this result is praise for their efforts” Professor Lawson says.
