Our international students lead in awards

A suite of Flinders University students has performed strongly in the 2018 StudyAdelaide International Student Awards, with Himal Kandel named International Student of the Year at a ceremony at Government House, and five other Flinders students winning their categories or presented with high commendations.

Mr Kandel is from Nepal and has completed a PhD in optometry. He stated that he is enjoying the best time of his life in Adelaide, “undertaking research and collaborating with some of the most outstanding minds in my field”.

Sebastian Raneskold, Vice-President and Pro Vice-Chancellor (International) at Flinders University said: “We congratulate Himal and all of our outstanding international students who have been honoured by these awards today.

“The calibre of our international students is testament to the efforts of our University, with their wins reflecting exceptional academic outcomes combined with valuable contributions they have made, and will continue to make, to our community.”

The StudyAdelaide International Student Awards recognise students’ ability to manage their study-work-life balance and their community contributions. Many of this year’s winners, including Mr Kandel, also volunteer to give back to the community.

Flinders University’s strengths in international education have underlined an increase of 70% in international enrolments over the past four years, eclipsing state and national averages and seeing the University recently recognised through a Business SA Export Award.

Mr Raneskold says Flinders’ focus on the student experience and preparing them for the future has been instrumental in shaping its growing attractiveness to international students.

“This means everything from personal support to empowering students with a global mindset, vigilantly reviewing the courses we offer, and providing quality practicums and placements.”
