Flinders’ Open Door Research Initiative is excited to announce the appointment of London based Hugh Milroy as an honorary Professor.
Hugh Milroy is Chief Executive Office of UK charity, Veterans Aid. In 2011 he was awarded an OBE for outstanding services to the ex-service community. Before committing full time to heading up the charity, he served for 17 years with the Royal Air Force.
Flinders’ Open Door has collaborated with Veterans Aid to develop the Welfare to Wellbeing© model of care for veterans and their families.
The Welfare to Wellbeing© model looks at both the context and the circumstances of the individual when tackling crisis. It introduces veterans to a system of holistic support and recognises that some issues need to be resolved as a priority before others can be addressed.
Professor Milroy pioneered the model in the UK, and Professor Wadham has been championing it in Australia.
Professor Milroy will bring his expertise to support Open Door’s activities in Australia and globally. His counsel will extend to policy, service provision models, communications and advocacy to government and the sector. He will contribute to research projects and educational opportunities to build meaningful new avenues of support for Australian veterans and their families.
Professor Ben Wadham, Director of Open Door, said it is a great privilege to have Professor Milroy onboard.
“Our leadership in changing the paradigm from welfare to wellbeing in research for, and with, veterans and their families has been inspired by Professor Milroy’s advocacy and will be boosted by his profile at Open Door.”
Professor Hugh Milroy says he looks forward to continuing to work closely with Professor Wadham and Flinders University.
“Professor Wadham’s approach to wellbeing research and delivery of holistic care to members of the veterans’ community has much in common with the Welfare to Wellbeing© model that I introduced in 2009, and which has underpinned activity at Veterans Aid ever since,” says Professor Milroy.
“I look forward to cooperating on further research projects that address the universal ‘real world’ problems of veterans in our respective countries.”
