The highly prestigious Endeavour Awards will take Flinders law student Jordan Gifford-Moore to China and nursing academic Associate Professor Alison Hutton to the US in 2014.

The annual Endeavour Awards, which are made by the Federal Government to further overseas educational, research and professional links and increase the skills and global awareness of high achievers, were announced last week.

Mr Gifford-Moore’s 2014 Australia Asia Endeavour scholarship, which is worth more than $40,000, will allow him to spend up to 12 months studying and working in the People’s Republic of China, where he will study Masters level law topics at Peking University, focusing on the Chinese political system and commercial law.

“A significant purpose of the Award is to develop graduates with specialised knowledge of Asia and links within the region. To that end I will undertake a number of internships in the political, legal and commercial sectors,” Mr Gifford-Moore said.

“Before arriving in Beijing I will be interning in the United States Congress as part of the Flinders Washington Internship Program and travelling throughout Europe, so I’m hoping that this Award will give me the opportunity to gain a broad global perspective.

“My long-standing interest in China began with Chinese history and literature and deepened when I began studying Mandarin and working in the Australian legal sector, which highlighted the importance of Asia to our future national interests.”

Associate Professor Hutton’s Executive Endeavour Fellowship Award will take her to the John Hopkins School of Nursing in Baltimore in April 2014.

Ms Hutton said her program with Associate Professor Joan Kub and Assistant Professor Jodi Shaefer would explore ways to involve undergraduate nursing students as advocates for children’s and adolescent’s health.

As well as acquiring an understanding of nursing students’ ability to become change agents and leaders in children’s and young people’s health, Associate Professor Hutton said she would observe the use of service learning that involves nursing students in fostering health and well-being in a school environment.

Inbound Endeavour scheme programs will bring Research Fellow Yanhong Liu from China and Postgraduate Scholarship winner Mya Mya Ching from Bangla Desh to Flinders.
