Kiwis once flew, and so did a giant relative
Research published in the journal Science shows the kiwi’s closest relative to be the Madagascan elephant bird – and they both once flew.

The kiwi is not a dwarf version of a distant ancestor but more likely evolved from a tiny bird that could have flown from Australia, according to a Flinders palaeontologist.
