Tribute to former Flinders University Chancellor Sir Eric Neal

Flinders University Vice-Chancellor Professor Colin Stirling has paid tribute to Sir Eric Neal AC CVO KStJ FTSE, the University’s former Chancellor, who has passed away at the age of 101.

Sir Eric Neal served as Chancellor of Flinders University from 2002 to 2010, following a distinguished career in public service, including his tenure as Governor of South Australia from 1996 to 2001.

As Flinders’ first Chancellor from a business background, Sir Eric brought with him his passion for educational opportunities and the application of knowledge directly to industry.

During his time as Chancellor, Sir Eric oversaw significant developments at Flinders, including the expansion of the University’s research profile and the strengthening of its ties with industry and government. His vision supported Flinders’ transformation into a global, research-intensive, industry-connected institution.

“Sir Eric was a man of great integrity and wisdom,” said Professor Stirling. “His contribution to Flinders University was profound, and his legacy continues to shape our institution today.

“He brought to the role of Chancellor a wealth of experience, a genuine passion for learning, and recognition of the value of forging close links between universities and private enterprise.

“He had an extraordinary ability to bring people together and to inspire confidence in the University’s mission. He was deeply respected by staff, students, and the broader community.”

Beyond his formal duties, Sir Eric remained a passionate advocate for higher education in South Australia and for Flinders, celebrating his 100th birthday at our city campus in June last year. His legacy is commemorated through our Sir Eric Neal building, where students carry out what Sir Eric described as the “renaissance of engineering.”

“On behalf of the entire Flinders University community, I extend our heartfelt condolences to Sir Eric’s family,” said Professor Stirling. “We honour his memory and celebrate a life dedicated to service, leadership and learning.”
