
Flinders University has been named a global leader in social impact, recognised #2 in the world and #1 in Australia for reducing inequalities, in a powerful endorsement of its commitment to equity, fair access and transformative education.
The result – announced in the prestigious 2025 Times Higher Education (THE) Impact Rankings released today – places Flinders among the top 25 universities globally delivering on the United Nations’ Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).
In an impressive development, Flinders also ranked 5th globally (#1 in Australia) for gender equality, reflecting its leadership in breaking down barriers and building pathways for more women to thrive academically and professionally.
The THE Impact Rankings is the main global ranking system that comprehensively assesses universities on their commitment to the United Nations’ 17 SDGs. Rankings are based on universities’ teaching, research, outreach, and stewardship.
In a standout year, Flinders achieved:
- #2 globally for Reduced Inequalities (SDG 10)
- #5 globally for Gender Equality (SDG 5)
- #10 in the world for Climate Action (SDG 13)
- #11 globally for Good Health and Wellbeing (SDG 3)
- Global top 50 for Sustainable Cities (SDG 11), Partnerships for the Goals (SDG 17)
- Global top 65 for Affordable and Clean Energy (SDG 7)
- 21st in the world overall

Flinders University Vice-Chancellor Professor Colin Stirling said the results are a resounding endorsement of Flinders’ role as one of the world’s most impactful universities in transforming lives and supporting students from all backgrounds to thrive.
“Our values of fairness, inclusion and equity of opportunity are not new – they’ve been the foundation of Flinders for nearly 60 years.
“The Australian Universities Accord calls on higher education to deliver greater equity and serve the national interest. At Flinders, that’s not a new ambition – it’s our daily reality.
“We don’t chase rankings – we deliver impact. But when global recognition comes, it confirms that our approach is working.”
The Minister for Education, Jason Clare said education is the most powerful cause for good.
“It doesn’t just change lives, it changes countries.
“That’s why I want more young people to finish school and go on to TAFE or university.
“This is recognition of the great work Flinders University is doing to help break down the barriers that stop a lot of people from disadvantaged backgrounds from getting a crack at university.”
SA Minister for Industry, Innovation and Science, Susan Close said this is a powerful endorsement for the work Flinders University do to ensure students have access to world class education, regardless of their personal circumstances.
