Flinders staff, students and graduates are dominating the 2014 South Australian Screen Awards, picking up 10 nominations across nearly every category, including Best Short Film, Best Feature and Best Comedy.
Flinders graduate Lewis Costin and final year student David Coyle are represented across seven categories in both the Screen and Craft Awards for the BCA Honours Screen graduation film Enfilade, with nominations spanning Best Short Film, Best Drama, Best Performance, Best Cinematographer, Best Director, Best Editor and Best Production Design.
52 Tuesdays, the Closer Productions film by former student Sophie Hyde (pictured), is nominated for Best Feature in this year’s Screen Awards. Filmed over 52 consecutive Tuesdays in Adelaide, the film has already won several overseas accolades, including a Crystal Bear award at the Berlin International Film Festival and best director (in world cinematic drama) at 2014 Sundance Film Festival.
Flinders Screen and Media Lecturer Dr Matt Hawkins and Flinders Creations Producer Dr Tom Young have also received a swag of nominations; Best Short Film, Best Comedy, Best Director and Best Writer for their film Love 2.0, which is also represented by Dave Raftery from Flinders Partners/Flinders Creations in the Best Editor category. The film will go up against Young Hearts by Flinders graduates Tim Hodgson and Jake Zappia for Best Comedy and Enfilade for Best Director.
Wastelander Panda, the futuristic fantasy series written, directed and produced by graduates Victoria Cocks and Kirsty Stark, is up for four nominations including Best Web Series, Best Cinematographer, Best Production Design and Best Sound Design.
Films by Hannah Sitters, Annalisa Francesca Lewis Costin and David Coyle have secured three of the five nominations in the Best Production Design category, while three of the six nominations in both the Best Cinematographer and Best Editor categories have gone to Flinders graduates Nima Nabili Rad, Andrew IIicic, Vivyan Madigan, Daniel Principe, Lewis Costin and Dave Raftery.
Dr Alison Wotherspoon, Screen Production Coordinator in the Department of Screen and Media, said the high number of nominations in both the Screen and Craft Awards reflects the significant impact that Flinders staff, students and graduates are making in local and national filmmaking and production.
“We are thrilled that so many Flinders graduates and students have been nominated for the 2014 South Australian Screen Awards and are represented across such a wide range of categories,” Dr Wotherspoon said.
“It reflects the remarkable breadth of talent in our students and graduates. We are very privileged to work with them as students and it is fantastic to see them transform into industry professionals,” she said.
“We are extremely proud of their success and wish them all the best at the awards night.”
Flinders affiliates have also been nominated for Best Documentary (Dogs Body), Best Music Video (Parra For Cuva – Wicked Games) and Best Composer (Young Hearts).
Winners will be announced at a gala awards night on May 16 at the Mercury Cinema, with the Best of SASA Screenings to take place from May 17-25.
