Cult cinema still provocative in a Netflix era

Three Flinders film students have curated a season of movie classics for Adelaide film society Cinémathèque at the Mercury Cinema.

Bridget McDonald, Gere Fuss and Kyle Davis have assembled a provocative line-up of cult favourites by filmmakers such as Richard Linklater, Lars Von Trier and Atom Egoyan for Adelaide Cinémathèque Season 2, which is airing from August to December 2017.

The program explores a number of themes, including the relationship between television and cinema, colloquial Australian culture, youth culture and cinematic trends at the turn of the millennium, and films that have influenced local Adelaide art and artists.

The students experienced challenges in sourcing some films that were no longer licensed for distribution and worked with Gail Kovatseff, Director of the Media Resource Centre and Mercury Cinema, to approach production companies directly.

Eight-session passes to the Flinders-curated film season are available now for $55 ($45 concession) from the Mercury Cinema.

The Mercury Cinema boasts 186 seats and features 35mm and 16mm film projection as well as the latest in 4k digital cinema technology.

Flinders University offers a diverse range of course options in the study of audio-visual media – including television, film, and digital media – at undergraduate and postgraduate level.
